Richie fait face à un quotidien difficile, lorsque sa sœur lui demande de garder sa nièce, Sophie, quelques heures.
Après quelques minutes, une scène qui m’a valu des sueurs chaudes, le malaise était proche, Shawn Christensen inflige à son auditoire un moment gênant où Richie (Christensen) tente de mettre fin à ses jours en s’ouvrant les veines tout en flottant dans une eau colorée par son sang. Richie va donc se faire éjecter de son état second par un appel. Cet appel, c’est sa soeur (Rossum) qui lui ordonne la garde de sa nièce, Sophia (Ptacek). Un coup de téléphone qui fera office de signe révélateur pour ce jeune homme désemparé.
S’en suit une aventure touchante où les chagrins et les confidences pleuvent tour à tour. Dans ce climat de confiance, l’histoire prendra une tournure un peu plus embêtante pour notre protagoniste où seront impliqués son boss, Bill (Perlman), un gérant de bar, Gidéon (Wesley) et, bien sûr, Richie. Une affaire pas claire dont l’importance prendra une ampleur conséquente avec, trimbalée au milieu de tout ça, la jeune Sophia.
Ce quotidien cauchemardesque est parfaitement mis en scène. Tablant sur une ambiance tristounette et des lumières sombres, Shawn Christensen réalise un film tout en sensibilité. Des personnages placés sous le signe d’une existence peu reluisante.
Comme premier film, Shawn Christensen démontre un talent indéniable. Before I Disappear, basé sur son court métrage Curfew qui lui a valu un Oscar en 2013, trouve son essence dans un scénario touchant. S’appuyant sur la délicatesse d’une oeuvre porteuse d’espoir et de renouveau, Christensen réussit à ne pas tomber dans les travers du film caricatural et niais. Par définition, on a beaucoup aimé un film qui fait partie des belles découvertes de cette Mostra.

English version:
Richie is living a hard life when his estranged sister suddenly asks him to watch over her daughter, Sophie, for a few hours.
After only a few minutes came a scene that gave me chills, not too far from losing conscience, Shawn Christensen confronts the audience with a disturbing moment when Richie (played by Christensen himself) attempts to end his own life by opening the arteries in his arm while floating in a bathtub filled with much of his own blood. Richie snaps out of his dying state because of a phone call. The call is from his sister (Rossum) with the aforementioned request that he watch over his niece (Ptacek). Unknowingly, that phone call will be his lifeline and will give the wayward young man something to live for.
What follows is a touching adventure where sorrow and intimacy mingle side by side. While building trust and trying to forge a relationship with the niece he never met, the story takes a turn for the worse for Richie when his boss Bill (Perlman) and a bar owner (Wesley) get involved in what seems to be a trivial incident. It turns out that the incident is quite murky and will grow in importance as the movie goes on, dragging the young Sophia in the exe of the hurricane.
The daily nightmare which Richie goes through is perfectly set up and filmed. Banking on a gloomy feeling and dark lighting, Shawn Christensen conjures one emotion-laden movie with characters who have faced (or are facing) challenging times in life.
For a first feature film, Shawn Christensen showcases obvious talent. Before I Disappear, based on the short film Curfew which earned him an Academy Award in 2013, finds its essence in a stirring script. Building on the subtlety of a message of hope and rebirth, Christensen succeeds in avoiding the pitfalls of such themes, which could have resulted in something cliché and farcical. By definition then, we greatly appreciated a movie which ranks amongst the beautiful discoveries at this Mostra.
