Durant mon épopée cannoise, j’ai eu la chance de rencontrer beaucoup, énormément de gens. Dans cette ribambelle de rencontres, j’ai rencontré Hari Viswanath, un réalisateur indien. Hari Viswanath et moi-même avons évoqué son prochain film : Radiopetti. Après avoir échangé nos cartes de visite, je reçois le lien pour visionner la bande-annonce ainsi que le synopsis tout à fait intéressant. Ma curiosité fut piquée.
Synopsis : Radiopetti, l’histoire d’un homme perdu dans un autre monde, un monde passé, rendu vivant à ses oreilles par une radio.
Comment évoluera son parcours de vie, avec cet amour qu’il porte à cette chose inanimée aux côtés de sa famille et de ses amis. Par où cet amour l’emmènera ?
C’est le premier long-métrage d’Hari. Radiopetti est un film indépendant, tourné sous la bannière Harry Toonz Studio. À l’heure où je vous parle, le film fut envoyé à la Mostra de Venise 2015 et au Festival de Toronto 2015 (TIFF), sans succès. Mais c’est à Busan, au BIFF (Busan International Film Festival) que Radiopetti sera présenté en première mondiale.
Tourné à Pondichéry (colonie française en Inde), Radiopetti touche par cette sobriété. Baigné par une douce mélodie, la bande-annonce de Radiopetti (Radioset) laisse transparaitre une histoire plus complexe qu’il n’y parait, où l’extrait d’un peu plus d’une minute se clôt sur une phrase qui intrigue : « we can understand his pain. »
Si nous nous intéressons de plus près à son réalisateur, nous apprenons que Hari Viswanath était ingénieur avant de devenir cinéaste. Le réalisateur de Chennai a réalisé Idukkan, un court-métrage, qui l’a vu remporter le « prix du meilleur court-métrage » au Festival du film de Tamil en 2013.

During my journey through Cannes, I had the good fortune of meeting a large number of persons. One of whom was Hari Viswanath.
A director from India, Hari Viswanath shared with me some thoughts about his upcoming film: Radiopetti. Having exchanged formalities and business cards, I received a link to watch the trailer for the movie as well as the synopsis, which I found extremely interesting. I was hooked.
Radiopetti is the story about a man lost in another world, a bygone world that has been brought to life thanks to a radio. How will his life change, with the love he bears for this inanimate object side by side with his friends and family? Where will this love take him?
Radiopetti will be Hari’s first feature film, an indie movie produced under the « Harry Toonz Studio » banner. At the time or writing, the film was sent to the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Well, Radiopetti has been selected for competition in Busan International Film Festival under new currents section. This is first Tamil language film to be selected for competition in Busan history.
Shot in Pondichéry (today Punducherry, a former French colony in India), Radiopetti seems to be a very moving story. Graced with a soothing melody, the trailer showcases a story far more complex than what we might believe at first sight. The short clip for the trailer ends with a rather intriguing sentence; « We can understand his pain. »
While examining Hari Viswanath’s career so far, one might notice that he was an engineer before devoting himself to cinema. The director from Chennai had previously made « Idukkan », a short, which earned him the award for best short at the Norway Tamil Film Festival in 2013.
In the meantime, while we wait for any future distribution in Switzerland, we can only enjoy this delicate teaser.
